Stained glass is built to last for generations, but let’s face it. Glass is fragile, and nothing lasts forever. Unless the glass gets broken though, such as by a hailstorm, by moving it, or something crashing into it, it’s usually the lead caning that deteriorates and needs to be replaced. Believe it or not, over time heavy wind can cause the lead strips to stretch. This gives the windows an odd bowed appearance and leaves the glass in a rickety and unstable condition. If not attended to, the glass pieces can even fall right out of the window and break, making your restoration job that much more complicated.
So if you have any antique stained glass that you value, you might want to periodically inspect it. Make sure there are no cracks in the glass, the panel is not bowing either in or out, and the glass pieces cannot be wiggled like a loose tooth. If you hear your window rattling in the wind, that’s a pretty good sign that it needs some TLC.
Please don’t wait. Please don’t think to yourself, “Well, it’s lasted hundreds of years, so I guess its time has come to an end.” Antique stained glass is valuable—not to mention beautiful reminder of the craftsmanship of days gone by. We would take great pride in restoring it for you, so it can be admired for another hundred years or so.
Restoring a piece of stained glass generally involves removing the entire window and rebuilding it with all new lead caning, thereby ensuring that it will last for many more generations. In fact, modern materials and techniques ensure that a restored stained glass window will be sturdier and longer lasting even than the original.
To replace the caning, each piece of glass needs to be removed individually and then reassembled with new lead. If glass pieces are broken or missing, we will match the color and replace them as well. And if you live in an area where the elements are particularly harsh on your stained glass windows, we will install it inside another pane of glass that will protect it from mother nature’s furies.
